Pergola Lighting Ideas: 8 Ways to Light Your Pergola

From integrated LED spots to fire features, plan pergola lights that work beautifully on British evenings.

Good lighting is what turns a pergola from a daytime sunshade into the heart of your garden after dark. The right pergola lighting ideas let you dine at ten on a June evening, read under a blanket in October and give the whole garden depth and drama from the kitchen window. Because we design, supply and install Tarasola aluminium pergolas, electrics, lighting and automation included, we've lit hundreds of terraces across Surrey and London. Here are eight pergola lighting ideas that genuinely work in the UK climate, with the practical detail (IP ratings, voltages, dimming and control) most guides skip.

1. Integrated LED spots in the louvres

The tidiest of all lights for pergolas: compact LED spots recessed directly into the rotating roof louvres of a bioclimatic pergola such as the Tarasola Technic. Tarasola's LED Spot is a discreet 23 mm round fitting running on a safe 24V system at a warm 3000K, restaurant-quality downlight with no visible cables. Because the spots sit in the louvres themselves, light angles change with the roof. Fully dimmable from the same remote that drives the roof, they're the option we specify most for dining areas.

2. LED strip around the perimeter frame

An LED Strip run around the pergola's frame gives a continuous, architectural line of light that traces the structure's silhouette, stunning on cubic designs, and the standard choice on retractable-roof models like the Technic View, where the moving louvres can't carry fittings. Tarasola's strip is 24V, cut precisely to your structure and dimmable, so it can drop from bright task light to a soft evening glow. Strips also suit fabric models, washing the underside of the roof with even, glare-free light.

3. RGB scene lighting for entertaining

Both the LED Strip and the larger LED Box fitting come in white or RGB versions, letting you shift from warm white dinners to colour-washed parties at the tap of an app. Paired with Tarasola's Bluetooth audio speakers hidden in the roof profiles, an RGB scheme turns the pergola into a genuine entertaining venue. Our advice: use colour as an accent, one RGB strip plus warm white spots, rather than lighting the whole space in saturated colour. All options are detailed on our pergola accessories page.

4. Festoon and string lights for instant charm

The classic budget-friendly pergola light: festoons draped between the beams give that relaxed, courtyard-café character. If you go this route, choose connectable festoons rated at least IP44 (IP65 if they'll stay out all winter), and hang them where the roof will still close freely, on a louvered roof, keep them below the moving louvres. Festoons flatter a pergola but rarely light a table properly, so treat them as decoration over a core of integrated LED. They pair especially well with fabric roof models, where the warm bulbs echo the relaxed, soft-canopied feel, see our fabric pergolas overview for the look.

5. Wall lights on the house side

On a wall-mounted (Gardena) pergola, the house wall is prime lighting real estate. Up/down wall washers either side of the doors tie the pergola visually to the house and light the threshold, the spot where most garden lighting schemes go dark. Choose IP44-rated fittings in a finish matching your pergola's powder-coating (anthracite 7016 is the safe bet) and put them on the same dimming circuit as the pergola so one scene controls everything.

6. Landscape uplighting around the posts

Recessed ground uplighters at the base of each aluminium post make the structure glow like a piece of architecture and add depth beyond the pergola's footprint, grazing light up a post, a tree or a rendered wall. Ground-recessed fittings should be IP67, and a 24V garden lighting system is safer and simpler to extend than mains. Because Tarasola's patented drainage runs rainwater down through the posts, the area around each post base stays tidy for clean fitting positions, one of the details our installation team plans at the design and 3D visualisation stage.

7. Table and floor lamps for layered cosiness

The trick that makes glossy magazine pergolas feel like living rooms: portable, rechargeable lamps at eye level. A cordless table lamp on the dining table and a floor lamp by the sofa fill the middle layer of light that overhead fittings miss. Look for IP54-rated rechargeable lamps and simply bring them in over winter. Under a closed louvered or glass roof they're well protected, pair them with sliding glazing or ZIP screen side enclosures and lamps can live outside most of the year.

8. Fire features and infrared warmth

Nothing draws people outdoors like flame. A fire bowl or gas fire table just beyond the pergola's edge (never under a closed roof without proper ventilation and clearances) gives flickering light no LED can imitate. For warmth under the roof itself, Tarasola's infrared heaters are the safe, controllable answer: the GR1 and remote-ready GR2 IR at 1.5 kW and the GR3 Glass at 2.2 kW, all IP65-rated with LOW GLARE emitters, so you get heat without a glowing orange bar overpowering your carefully layered lighting.

Bringing it together: control, scenes and automation

The difference between a terrace with some lights and a beautifully lit pergola is control. On Tarasola's rotating-louvre models the Teleco system runs roof, LED lighting, heaters and even the hidden Bluetooth audio from one remote, while fabric and sliding-louvre models use Somfy IO Homecontrol, both with smartphone apps, so "dinner", "party" and "late film" become one-tap scenes. Automation goes further still: presence simulation switches your pergola lights while you're on holiday, and weather sensors quietly close the roof when rain arrives so cushions, lamps and electronics stay dry. Layered properly, spots for the table, strip for the architecture, lamps for cosiness, flame for magic, the result reads like an interior designer lit it.

Planning your pergola lighting: quick UK checklist

  • IP ratings: IP44 minimum under cover, IP65 for exposed fittings and heaters, IP67 for ground-recessed lights.
  • Go 24V: Tarasola's LED Spot, Box and Strip all run on 24V, safer outdoors and easy to extend.
  • Dim everything: full brightness for cooking, 20% for conversation.
  • One control: roof, lights, heaters and audio from a single remote or smartphone app, with automation and presence simulation.
  • Wire once: plan lighting with the structure so cabling runs invisibly through the aluminium profiles.

Because our team handles the electrics as part of every pergola installation, all of this is designed in from day one, no trailing cables, no retrofit compromises.
