Louvered vs Fabric Roof Pergolas: Which Should You Choose?
Bioclimatic louvered pergola or retractable roof pergola? A straight comparison of mechanisms, weather performance and value.
Choosing between a louvered pergola and a retractable roof pergola with fabric is the single biggest decision in any pergola project, it shapes the budget, the look and how many days a year you will actually use your garden. Both are modern aluminium pergolas, both give you a roof you control, and both are worlds away from an open timber frame. But the mechanisms behind them are very different, and so is their weather performance. As a specialist Tarasola installer, we install both every week; here is the honest comparison we give customers in our Epsom showroom.
How a Louvered Pergola Works
A bioclimatic pergola, a pergola with louvered roof, has a roof made of chambered, extruded-aluminium slats that rotate on demand. On the Tarasola louvered platform the louvres rotate from 0° to 135°: fully closed they form a solid, rain-tight roof with patented double-gutter drainage carrying water invisibly down through the posts; tilted they let you angle sunlight and ventilation to the degree; fully open they let warm air escape so heat never builds up underneath. Everything is motorised, driven by remote or smartphone app, and rain, wind and snow sensors can manage the roof automatically. The flagship Tarasola Technic spans single modules up to 450×692cm and joins modules in unlimited runs, while the Technic View adds a scissor mechanism that slides the louvres aside into a stack covering just 25% of the roof, open sky at the touch of a button.
How a Retractable Fabric Roof Pergola Works
A retractable roof pergola with fabric uses a PU-coated technical membrane with a black inner coating that glides along guide rails within an aluminium frame. Extended, it forms a waterproof, fully shading canopy with rainwater again drained through the posts; retracted, it folds into a compact stack leaving the sky completely open, and it can stop at any position in between. Premium fabric models are motorised with the same sensor and app options as louvered systems, while entry models such as the Tarasola Simple use a manual crank (with motor upgrade optional). The premium Tarasola Cubic is the range's statement piece: a unique flat roof with a double-layer structure, a weatherproof upper layer and a clean ceiling-like lower layer, in a strikingly minimalist cubic form.
Louvered vs Fabric: Side-by-Side Comparison
- Roof mechanism
- Louvered: rotating aluminium louvres, 0 to 135° · Fabric: retractable membrane, stoppable at any position
- Wind resistance
- Louvered: up to 160 km/h (Technic family; Essential 120 km/h) · Fabric: up to 120 km/h (Cubic, Elegancy, Flat; lighter models 50 km/h)
- Snow performance
- Louvered: engineered snow loads of 120 to 600 kg/m², stays closed all winter · Fabric: roof retracts before snowfall (automatic with sensors)
- Light & ventilation control
- Louvered: precise louvre angles fine-tune sun, shade and airflow · Fabric: open, closed or partially extended shade
- Open-sky feeling
- Louvered: tilted louvres, or fully open sky with the retractable Technic View · Fabric: fully open sky whenever the canopy is stacked away
- Price positioning
- Louvered: premium engineering, higher investment · Fabric: broader range, from accessible manual models to premium motorised systems
- Accessories
- Both: LED lighting, infrared heaters, weather sensors, app control, ZIP screens and side enclosures (model-dependent)
Weather Performance: The Decisive Difference
For genuine all-season, all-weather use, the louvered pergola is the stronger structure. Closed aluminium louvres shrug off storms, flagship Tarasola louvered models are rated for wind up to 160 km/h and snow loads from 120 to 600 kg/m² depending on size, so the roof stays shut and your furniture stays dry through the worst of a British winter. A fabric roof is fully waterproof in normal rain and handles wind impressively for a membrane (up to 120 km/h on premium models), but in snow the correct behaviour is to retract it, which the snow sensor does automatically. In practice: a louvered pergola is a permanent solid roof that opens; a fabric pergola is a superb retractable canopy that closes. Both keep out rain; only one is designed to carry a winter's snow.
Design, Light and Everyday Living
Day to day, the differences are more about feel. Louvre control is wonderfully precise, morning sun at 30°, deep shade at noon, a fully vented roof for a summer evening, and models like the Technic Pro integrate cassette-free ZIP screens for a sealed, cubic look. Fabric systems trade that precision for total openness: retract the canopy and there is simply nothing above you, which many garden lovers prize. Aesthetically, the Cubic's double-layer flat roof gives an interior-quality ceiling, while sloping-roof fabric models suit classic homes. Both platforms take the full Tarasola accessory set, dimmable LED lighting, low-glare infrared heaters, hidden audio and app automation, plus glazing, shutters and screens from our accessories range.
Price Positioning: What to Expect
In qualitative terms, the two families occupy different bands of the market. Fabric roof pergolas span the widest range: a manually operated model like the rope-driven Tarasola Wave is the accessible entry point to the range, mid-tier motorised systems add remotes, sensors and LED, and a premium double-layer design such as the Cubic approaches louvered territory. Bioclimatic louvered pergolas start higher and climb further, you are paying for chambered extruded-aluminium louvres, heavier-duty motors and the engineering behind those 160 km/h wind and 120 to 600 kg/m² snow ratings, with retractable-louvre and integrated-screen models like the Technic View Pro at the very top of the range. Neither is "better value" in the abstract: the right question is how many months of the year you want the structure to work for you. For exact numbers, our UK pergola cost guide sets out general market ranges, and because every Harmony View pergola is made to order, we quote each project individually, fixed and free.
